I am excited to share my recent feature in the School of American Ballet's Alumni Spotlight. This article traces my journey in the world of dance – from my initial steps, driven by a pure love for the art, to the establishment of the Braswell Arts Center in Basel, Switzerland.

Reflecting on my training at SAB, The Ailey School, and The Juilliard School, I feel immense gratitude for the mentors and experiences that shaped my career. My journey took me across continents, allowing me to perform with renowned dance companies and immerse myself in diverse cultural and artistic environments. This journey wasn't just about performing; it was about growing and understanding the breadth of what dance could be....

New Creation for Desales University Dance

A Celebration of Dance: My Experience at DeSales University Dance Ensemble Concert

EXCITED to share my recent experience choreographing for the DeSales University Dance Ensemble Concert.

Music mixed by Zen Jefferson

This piece reflects my diverse religious upbringing and the journey towards personal spiritual understanding. This piece will be a narrative exploration of the different religious influences that I experienced and how they shaped my unique perspective. Spiritual understanding is a personal journey, where diverse influences can harmoniously coexist. I hope this piece could resonate deeply with audiences, reflecting not just my personal journey but also the universal search for meaning and identity.

The talent and dedication of the DeSales dance majors were palpable, and their execution the steps was nothing short of inspiring.

A Tribute to Josef Helfenstein

A Memorable Evening at the Kunst Museum Basel: A Tribute to Josef Helfenstein

I am excited to share my experience at the recent farewell celebration for Director Josef Helfenstein at the Kunst Museum Basel, held on November 25, 2023. It was an evening filled with heartfelt tributes, exceptional music, and, of course, dance.

The highlight for me was the privilege of performing "Echo," a piece co-created with Julian Nicosia. Dancing alongside Julian, we delved into an exploration of reflections and the echoes we leave in our wake. This performance was more than a dance; it was a poetic journey through movement, light, and words, reflecting on the themes of departure and continuity.

As we paid tribute to Josef Helfenstein and his remarkable tenure at the Kunstmuseum Basel, the event was a reminder of the power of art to bring people together, to evoke emotion, and to leave lasting impressions.

Guest Teacher at the Royal Swedish Ballet School

It has been an extraordinary experience filled with the vibrant energy of talented students. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Cecilia Moss for extending the invitation, allowing me to be part of this unforgettable experience.

From the moment I arrived in Stockholm, I was captivated by the city's enchanting atmosphere. As a first-time visitor, I was eager to immerse myself in the rich culture that Stockholm has to offer. The city exudes a sense of artistic passion and great STYLE.

Witnessing the commitment and determination of the students to refine their skills was a constant reminder of why I love teaching. It was a joy to witness their growth and dedication. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their artistic journey.

Thank you Cecilia Moss, the director of the Royal Swedish Ballet School, for extending the invitation to teach in Stockholm! Her dedication to nurturing young talent and providing a platform for artistic exploration is truly commendable. Under her guidance, the Royal Swedish Ballet School has become a hub for excellence in dance education, and I am honored to have been a part of this exceptional community.

As I write this, my time in Stockholm has been nothing short of extraordinary...... and still a few days to go!

Guest Speaker and Teacher at SAB

The School of American Ballet holds a special place in my heart, and I feel truly grateful and blessed to have had the opportunity to return, not as a student, but as a mentor to the next generation of talented young dancers.

Stepping back into the classrooms of this esteemed institution, where I once honed my skills, was an exhilarating experience. This was not merely a trip down memory lane but a chance to give back to the institution that played a significant role in my artistic journey.

The young dancers I had the honor of teaching showed dedication, passion, and raw talent - qualities that the School of American Ballet continually fosters in its students. Their eagerness to learn and their persistent pursuit of perfection were heartwarming to witness and even more rewarding to teach.

Under the revered banner of the School of American Ballet, these budding artists are following in the footsteps of many greats who have graced the stages of world-class theaters. It was a privilege to contribute to their journey, sharing insights from my experiences, and helping guide their artistic growth.

Returning to the School of American Ballet, albeit for a short while, was a fulfilling and enriching experience.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Aesha Ash and the School of American Ballet for welcoming me back and allowing me to be part of the incredible work they do. Here's to nurturing the future stars of ballet, and to the continuous celebration of dance and its ability to inspire, transform, and connect us.

Guest Teaching at LaGuardia High School

Creating art is an intimate journey, one that evolves and grows when shared with others. And so, it gives me immense pleasure to share that in addition to crafting my latest piece, I have also had the distinct privilege of teaching at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School.

Teaching at LaGuardia was nothing short of an amazing full-circle moment for me. Walking the familiar hallways, entering the classrooms, and witnessing the eager faces of budding artists – the experience was deeply rewarding, brimming with both nostalgia and hope.

A heartfelt thank you to the remarkable seniors of LaGuardia High School for your unyielding passion and dedication. You have not only been my students but also my inspiration, reminding me why I embarked on this creative journey in the first place.

I extend my deepest gratitude to Ms. Mathesius and Greg for this extraordinary opportunity. Your faith in me, a proud alum, made this enriching experience possible. Your unwavering support has created an environment where artistic talent is nurtured, and dreams are given wings.

This teaching experience served as a reminder that art is not solely about individual expression, but also about sharing knowledge, fostering growth, and inspiring the next generation. As we nurture young talents, we are ensuring the future of the arts, one that is vibrant, diverse, and resilient.

I am forever grateful to LaGuardia High School, its faculty, and its students for embracing me with open arms and allowing me the honor of contributing to its rich artistic legacy.

Guest Teacher for ABT Studio Company

Recently, I had the distinct honor and pleasure of teaching contemporary dance to the gifted performers at the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Studio Company.

Watching these dedicated artists interpret the fluidity, energy, and emotions of contemporary dance was a testament to their adaptability and immense talent. This expressive dance form, with its blend of ballet, modern, and other elements, challenges the traditional dance norms and encourages individuality. Witnessing these dancers rise to this challenge was truly inspiring.

A sincere thank you to Sascha and the entire team at ABT Studio Company. Your commitment to cultivating talent and fostering artistic growth is commendable. And to the dancers - witnessing your progress, your interpretative nuances, and your boundless enthusiasm was an absolute delight. The future of ballet looks very promising with artists like you.

Keep shining, ABT Studio Company, you look great!

Musuem Night Basel

Hey everyone!

Come dance with me at Basel Museum Night!!!

I am so excited to announce that I will be giving a dance workshop at the Kunstmuseum Basel on Friday, January 20th, 2023 from 8pm to 10pm. This will be part of the Museum's Night program, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share my love of dance with all of you.

As a dancer and choreographer, I have always been drawn to the expressive power of movement in the community. I believe that dance has the ability to convey emotions and ideas in a way that words simply cannot.

That's why this is big for me. No matter your experience level, I encourage you to join me and discover the joy of dance.

If you are in the Basel area, I hope you will join me at the Kunstmuseum on January 20th. It's going to be a fun and exciting night, and I can't wait to see you all there! For more info: https://museumsnacht.ch/en/

Guest Speaker at Swisspeers Start-up Event

It was an absolute honor to be invited as speakers for the Swisspeers Start-Up event. For those who may not be familiar, Swisspeers is an innovative platform that helps fund projects and ideas through a community of investors and serious dreamers. The Braswell Arts Center recently used Swisspeers to fund their new space, and we were thrilled to be part of the event and share our story with their network.

As entrepreneurs and business owners, my wife Lisa and I know firsthand the challenges of starting and growing a company. It takes hard work, dedication, and a willingness to push past boundaries and take calculated risks. In our short speech, we shared some of our own experiences and offered encouragement and humor to the aspiring entrepreneurs in attendance.

One thing we emphasized is the importance of staying true to your vision and not letting setbacks or challenges deter you. We also talked about the value of seeking out mentors and surrounding yourself with supportive people who can offer guidance and encouragement along the way.

Overall, it was a fantastic event and we were truly humbled to be invited as speakers. We were inspired by the passion and drive of the other attendees and are excited to see what the future holds for them and their businesses. We are grateful to Swisspeers for creating such a valuable platform and for giving us the opportunity to share our experiences and insights.

New Position at TaZ ZHdK

I am so excited to finally announce that I have accepted a part-time position as a Contemporary Teacher at the TaZ at ZHdK! This has been in the works for a while now and I am beyond excited to start this new chapter in my career.

The first week has been a full one, and the dancers are working hard and showing a lot of enthusiasm. I am really impressed by their dedication and talent.

The studios at the TaZ are top-notch and state-of-the-art. I had the chance to try out the sound system and let me tell you, the acoustics are amazing. I even blasted some Biggie Smalls through the hallways just to test it out and it sounded amazing.

The dancers are hungry and working hard, and I can already feel the sense of community and support that exists at TaZ.

I am so grateful for this opportunity and can't wait to see what the future holds. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey and to the TaZ team for welcoming me with open arms.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

DANCE / COMPOSITION

Students learn creative ways to move their body while exploring elements of professional dance techniques. A special focus on basic composition and individuality, hopefully leading to a small creation. Our classes promote positive self-image and are for all ages and body types. This class is hard work, but lots of fun.

ART / CRAFTING

Our young artists are given a guided experience though multiple “colors” of Art. From painting to crafting to sculpture, artists are encouraged to create every day and mentored through different styles and basic techniques. This program also introduces elements of fashion and sustainable art, our walls will be full with daily exhibitions.

DIGITAL ART/TECHNOLOGY

This class adds a computer to all art forms. Children are daily guided through a digital exploration of computer functions and programs and their impact on different art forms. Because each day is a new experience, this class aims to create a “digital diary” to encourage the students to “document” their time here, with a focus on video creation. Most importantly this class connects all art forms through a modern technology and gives each student a chance to shine.

2019 Braswell Arts Center workshop

Gaga at BAC

I know I have been saying that I was going to do this FOREVER! So finally..... Gaga at the Braswell Arts Center! I am so excited! :) :) :)

Open to all ages and all body types as always. And Beginners are of course welcome!

What is Gaga?

Gaga/people classes are taught by dancers who have worked closely with Ohad Naharin. Teachers guide the participants using a series of evocative instructions that build one on top of the other. Rather than copying a particular movement, each participant in the class actively explores these instructions, discovering how he or she can interpret the information and perform the task at hand. Gaga/people classes offer a creative framework for participants to connect to their bodies and imaginations, increase their physical awareness, improve their flexibility and stamina, and experience the pleasure of movement in a welcoming, accepting atmosphere.

Also on the menu is Lyrical Jazz with me!!! That is always fun!

You can sign up online and find more information here: https://braswellartscenter.com/workshops/ or simply just send an email to: admin@braswellartscenter.com

Olivia Ancona, Gaga

Olivia Ancona was born in San Francisco, however grew up in Berkeley, London, and predominately Portland, Oregon. After training at the Juilliard School, she joined the Batsheva Ensemble (2010-2012) under the direction of Ohad Naharin and returned to the main company in 2015. Olivia was a founding member of Sharon Eyal’s LEV, and has worked with Mats EK, Johan Inger, Wim Vandekeybus in the Royal Swedish Ballet, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Eastman) and Luca Veggetti, amongst others. Most recently she was a guest with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and in the fall of 2016 danced, acted, and coached in the recently premiered film, Suspiria, directed by Luca Guadagnino. She is a certified gaga teacher and regularly teaches workshops and classes internationally, as well as staging Sharon Eyal’s works. She is currently based out of Berlin.

Lecture at the Juilliard School

It was a great lecture at the Juilliard School for the Senior seminar class. The topic was Securing a job in Europe. Thank you Alicia and team for a great class. Here are a few of my favorite quotes I collected for the lecture.........

Be aware. Be informed. There is really no excuse in this day and age to not know what type of company you are auditioning for. My friends from other companies say the same and it can come off disrespectful. Make triple sure that you have the names spelled correctly and are addressing the person in a very polite way. You can never be too polite. Try not to give the I need any job template email attitude.

-CRISTIANA SCIABORDI -Ballett Theater Basel Ballett Master

Within the process of an audition I always want to first get to know the background, experience and technique of the dancers who apply for a position with our company. Therefore we ask them to forward video(s) with whatever material they can provide and if possible contemporary variations. It can be an improvisation as well as a sequence from the repertoire they are dancing at the moment. For me as ballet director it is just vital to get a closer view of the dancer's technical abilities and her or his personality. Any video material over-sophisticated or too elaborated camera work  can blur the view on the individuality and uniqueness of the respective dancer. Therefore my overall advice for the presentation is to keep it simple and honest.

-GOYO MONTERO - Staatstheater Nürnberg Director

Present videos that are clear, well lit and show you dancing to music, not with music overlaid on a bunch of movement. Make an impression by presenting how you work, not only relying on being a good mover.

-TAMAS MORITZ - Royal Ballet Of Flanders Assoiate Director

Personality. Physicality. Like a sponge, ready to learn and to work. Hungry. To complete yourself not only as a dancer, but also as a person. I always say its pretty easy these days to find good dancers, but not so easy to find good people.

-STEPHEN DELATTRE - Delattre Dance Company

Braswell Arts Center

What is the Braswell Arts Center about?

After many years of thinking of a way to bridge the gap between art and the public, the idea for the Braswell Arts Center was born. Our Arts Center will offer quality classes and provide a space for creativity, collaboration and innovation in all art forms. The newly designed space will be fully transformable for professional dance performances, concerts, gallery exhibits, and special events. We also see this as a chance to collaborate with the Basel arts community, schools and sponsors to provide a new and fresh initiative for emerging artists and underprivileged kids called the «Braswell Arts Center Public Education Exchange Program». Through the newly established Braswell Arts Center Fund, we can support our new programs to offer free movement and performance classes as well as development and performance opportunities for artists worldwide.

How you can help: https://wemakeit.com/projects/the-braswell-arts-center

This is why we need your support:

While we are extremely excited about the future of the Braswell Arts Center, this is a huge undertaking for us. We have many important costs to cover in order to put our dreams for the Arts Center into action. While we plan to put our own money where our mouth is, the total start-up budget for the whole project is rather large. We are asking the public to help us with the biggest cost we have at the moment…the SPRUNG DANCE FLOOR. A professional, sprung floor is the second step (after the building) to realizing our goal and, due to the size of the space, costs quite a bit. We would be eternally grateful for your donation to help us with this cost. It would bring us one step closer to achieving our goal of creating a space to offer quality classes and social programs – therefore, establishing a more approachable and less intimidating public relationship with art and artists.

How you can help: https://wemakeit.com/projects/the-braswell-arts-center

Rewards?!

While each donation is received with our sincerest gratitude, we wanted to have some fun with this and are happy to provide some pretty cool rewards to our donors, including tickets to a performance at Theater Basel and a one-year FREE membership to ALL Ballet Dienstag classes!

Should we, somehow, someway, overshoot our goal, all donations will go directly to preparing the building for opening in August 2017. These costs include architectural design services, construction, electricians, barres, mirrors, sound equipment, etc. etc. We have many wonderful and exciting ideas for ways to make the Arts Center a state-of-the-art artistic hub in Basel, available to not only professional artists around the world, but also to the next generation of artists growing up in our local community.

This center has come to feel like a lifelong journey that is so close to reaching an incredible chapter and, while scary in the best of ways, the excitement leading up to it is palpable — not only within our family, but also within the many people who have supported us along the way.

As some of you may know, our founder, Armando Braswell, had a difficult childhood and was very generously helped and guided throughout the years to reach this point in his life. We share his TEDx talk below to represent his deep-rooted passion in dreaming big, despite the odds, but also to honor those who stood by him every step of the way.

With you all by our sides, we believe we can make it.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for considering donating to our project. We are indescribably grateful.

Ballett Dienstag

About Ballett Dienstag

Introducing a ballet class with Juilliard Graduate and Ballett Basel soloist, Armando Braswell. With a LIVE pianist!!!

Classical dance with its precise rules is a great training opportunity for physical posture and movement. But not only the body is trained. Rhythmic sense and musicality, power of observation, concentration and memory are just as important. Therefore, learning the language of classical ballet is great for everyone – comparable to learning a musical instrument. Add to that, the positive effect on the body and the joy of movement.

real talk with armando braswell

Real Talk is here!

My Column Real Talk with Armando Braswell is LIVE!!! I am sooo happy :)

Get your issue of DANCE FOR YOU magazine and tell me what you think!

My favorite answer from Lydia Bustinduy:

on dancing with someone you don't get along with...

Dancing with someone you do not get along with is, forgive my comparison, like wearing an uncomfortable shirt. After wearing it for a while, one gets used to it and maybe it even becomes one of your favorite shirts.

Armando featured in the Basler Zeitung Newspaper

What a nice surprise!

An English translation is below.

https://www.facebook.com/armando.braswell/activity/613891380380

A Rough English translation:

From New York City to Basel

Armando Braswell dances his third season at the Theater Basel - and is excited about the new home.
His kids will love the Zolli. And the Autumn Fair, the many treats - or ride on the carousel. The proximity of the Rhine. And the playgrounds in the park. If Armando Braswell sees his two sons Noah and Gabe grow up in Basel, carefree and safe, he is grateful. For he himself had a difficult childhood, had to fight through bite zweitweise. The dancers grew up in the major American metropolis of New York. When he was 9 years old, he lost his biological mother, Armando and his twin sister came to adoptive parents. His "new" mother took care of ten children, she was overwhelmed financially, what the children were feeling. Eventually, the house burned down, there was Braswell 16. "I've decided to move out and continue to stand on their own two feet." He stayed with friends on the floor, on the couch, sometimes in hallways. During this time he danced a lot, several hours a day, cut on his technique. "For two years, the dancing everything for me, it gave me confidence and new courage to face life," says the Americans. At 18, he danced at the Juilliard School, one of the most respected and recognized music conservatories in the world. Only twelve men are taken annually, Braswell did not make it on the first try. A year later, he convinced the strict jury - and was able to resume the study: "The four years were incredibly intense, and hard. More than once I wanted to stop. It is constantly compared with others is never good enough. I was mentally to my limits, "he says. A teacher believed in his talent and finally persuaded him to quit the study. "I'm the first one in our family who managed a degree. This fills me with pride. "

First Munich, then Stuttgart

Two weeks later, he left with his wife Lisa, who he has known since college, New York to audition in Munich. He managed thanks to the recommendation of a friend at the Theater am Gärtnerplatz, danced there for one year. Then, as the artistic director joined the couple Braswell moved on to Stuttgart. He was one of the founding members of the dance ensemble "Gauthier Dance". For five years he remained in Stuttgart. He repeatedly asked about Basel, "the ballet has an excellent international reputation." In 2012, he was able to convince the ballet director Richard Wherlock the audition and got a permanent contract in ballet ensemble. That was 2012. Today, the American and lives with his family in width district, directly on the Rhine - and is excited about the city. "Basel is alive, provides day and night cultural events. I find here everything I need to live, "says one, who grew up in the big city of New York. The dancer shakes his head: "New York is not as glamorous as many believe. Only those who have money, you can live without worries. Without it can also be very hard. "That's why Braswell sees his future here in a European city like Basel. They offer better prospects for his children who already speak German.

Lisa's Cupcakes

His wife Lisa wants to establish its own foothold here, she bakes cupcakes Armando Braswell must test every day. "As a dancer I train enough to I can afford it," he says with a wink. He is aware that he is one with 31 already for the older iron. "I dance as long as I can dance," he says on his future plans addressed. His own blog - "L'interview de l'air", which he feeds every two weeks with a new artist portrait, have awakened another passion in him to take those for writing, journalism foot, would thus be an option for him: "What I learned as a teenager in New York: There's always a new chance at life. You just have to believe in it. "
