The energy in Basel was already electric for the Eurovision Song Contest, but the “Dance Is in the Air” flashmob took it to another level. Just before the big finale, hundreds of dancers and music lovers gathered in the heart of the city to move together to Switzerland’s winning song from 2024, “The Code” by Nemo.
The choreography, created by Basel’s own Muhammed Kaltuk, was open, inclusive, and pure fun. In the weeks leading up to the event, I teamed up with Axel Hernandez to teach the flashmob choreography to as many Baslers as we could. We ran open classes at both the Braswell Arts Center and SE Dance Studio, making sure everyone, from seasoned dancers to complete beginners, could join in. On the big day, the results were magical, parents dancing with kids, friends laughing through the steps, and tourists filming every moment. In those few minutes, the whole square felt like one big family.
