This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to teach contemporary dance at the American Ballet Theatre JKO school. It was an experience that not only enriched my journey as a dance educator but also allowed me to connect with a new generation of talented young dancers.
With the Amazing Dancer and teacher Amos Machanic!!!
The ABT school, renowned for its classical ballet training, has been expanding its curriculum to include contemporary dance. I was honored to contribute by sharing my knowledge and passion for contemporary movement. The students’ energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and it was clear from day one that they were eager to dive into contemporary dance.
Shout out to my amazing musican Mark Katsaounis!!!
Throughout the program, I focused on bringing a diverse range of movement styles to the students. My aim was to challenge their technique, musicality, and expression. Many of them came from a strong ballet background, so introducing elements of floor work, improvisation, and unconventional movement dynamics was a refreshing change. It was inspiring to watch how they adapted and grew, embracing the fluidity and freedom that contemporary dance offers.
Lovely to see Hollie Wright in the building!!!
One of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was witnessing the students’ growth in such a short period. They tackled each class with determination and curiosity, pushing their boundaries and exploring new ways to express themselves. By the end of my two weeks, their transformation was evident—not just in their technical ability but in the confidence with which they approached the movement.
Teaching at ABT this summer reaffirmed my belief in the importance of blending classical ballet with contemporary dance. It opens up new possibilities for dancers, providing them with a more holistic understanding of movement. I left the experience feeling inspired by the students’ dedication and reminded of why I love teaching dance.
I’m grateful to ABT for the opportunity to work with such a talented group and look forward to future collaborations. Here’s to a summer of learning, growth, and the beautiful exchange of dance!
Thank you Sasha for your trust!!!
